Subject: MJ&S: The awful truth, and some ideas on what to do about it
Now that I'm a member of this illustrious organization, I feel it
my duty to expose a horrendous wrong which has unintentionally plagued this
mailing list.
According to my information, Speed was in fact *NOT* played by Jan
Michael Vincent, but was portrayed by Harvey Keitel. My source: the Movies
Unlimited 1991 video catalog. For your perusal, the entire article is
reproduced below.
Mother Jugs & Speed (1976)
Freewheeling brew of black comedy and melodrama that
centers around the outlandish exploits of a shoestring ambu-
lance crew. Bill Cosby is the lead-footed driver, Harvey Keitel
the suspended cop with the dark past, and Raquel Welch is
the busty radio dispatcher who's busy staving off incoming
advances. Co-stars Dick Butkus and Larry Hagman; directed
by Peter Yates ("Bullitt"). 96 min.
04-2183 $79.95
The disclosure of the above information means a lot, obviously. We
now have enough information to put together a Mother Jugs & Speed FAQ list,
which I am already working on. Perhaps I may be able to get it done by next
issue?
Also, if the mailing list is indeed split into smaller lists, I
recommend the addition of one other group, MJ&S.other-actors. This would be
for Dick Butkus and Larry Hagman fans who don't like Bill Cosby,
Raquel Welch, OR Harvey Keitel/Jan Michael Vincent .. but who still like
the movie. Also, perhaps a subgroup of MJ&S.speed could be formed, namely
MJ&S.speed.jan-michael-vincent. The purpose of this group would be to
explore the reasons why Jan Michael Vincent did not portray Speed. Just
some thoughts for the subscribers.
Of course, my source could always be wrong. Perhaps someone would
like to check out the video box?

THE MOTHER JUGS & SPEED FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS LIST
===============================================================================
This list is a compendium of Frequently Asked Questions about the
movie Mother Jugs & Speed (MJ&S). Granted, not too many people have been
asking questions, but this list is nonetheless provided for the curious
reader. This list is meant to be a companion piece to the official Mother
Jugs & Speed mailing list, and comes in handy for those not familiar with
the movie who have questions about it. The current maintainer of this list
is Jim Allenspach (jima@bucs1.bradley.edu), who is solely responsible for
its content. Any corrections, suggestions, and/or feedback should be sent
to him, NOT the maintainer of the mailing list.
To get on the MJ&S mailing list, write to Daniel Rench
(drench&bucs1.bradley.edu).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE QUESTIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Who played Mother, and what did he do in the movie?
A: Bill Cosby played Mother, and he played the lead-footed driver.
2. Who played Jugs, and what did he do?
A: That's *she*, mind you. Jugs was played by Raquel Welch, and in the
movie she played the busty radio dispatcher who's busy staving off incoming
advances.
3. Who played Speed, and what did he do?
A: Ah, here we enter a shady region. Since nearly the beginning of the
mailing list, Speed was thought to have been portrayed by Jan Michael
Vincent. But, new evidence comes to light that Harvey Keitel may have
portrayed Speed. Unless someone actually watches the movie, we may never
know.
Speed, by the way, was the suspended cop with the dark past.
4. Who else was in the movie?
A: Dick Butkus and Larry Hagman.
5. Who directed the movie, and what other films has he done?
A: Peter Yates directed the movie, and he has also directed
"Bullitt".
6. What's the movie about?
A: It's a free-wheeling brew of black comedy and melodrama that
centers around the outlandish exploits of a shoestring ambulance crew.
7. How much is a copy of MJ&S?
A: MJ&S is currently available from Movies Unlimited for $79.95. Other
places may have it cheaper.
8. How can I find out more info about the movie?
A: Keep reading the MJ&S mailing list! Or go rent the movie.

i noticed as we watched Mother Jugs & Speed for the second time tonight
that in the scene where Mother first buzzes through the group of
nuns in his rig, his left front parking light/turn signal is burnt
out. is it a mistake, or was the director trying to convey Mother's
"burnt-out" attitude to the audience?
also, Jeff noticed that the U.S. flag flying over F+B Headquarters
is a 1976 Bicentennial flag, thereby confirming the year the movie
was made. (Jeff was too lazy to mail this in himself)
---
I think that Mother felt he was obligated to have control over the nuns,
sort of a "Mother Superior," if you will. Mother's relationship with the
nuns goes from playful (at the beginning), to curteous (following [SPOILER!]
Leroy's death), and finally back to playful (at the end). Mother seems to
have done some serious soul searching between the 2nd and 3rd nun incidents.
Netters?
As far as the date is concerned, it says 1976 on the video tape's label,

I notice that in issue nine of the digest, Jeffrey Laird poses (and

>1. What kind of humor is Mother, Jugs & Speed?

But he spelled "irresistable" without a "t"! Coincidence or destiny?
What do you think? Jeff, what sort of hidden symbolic meaning were
you trying to convey?
Also, Jim Allenspach's informative posting states that MJ&S is 96
minutes long, but when I watched it last Tuesday it seemed a lot
longer! Did anyone else notice this "time-dilation" effect, or was it
a product of my fevered semi-conscious state?

Subject: MJ&S length!
MJ&S was 96 minutes exactly!
It WAS too short!
Why didn't they make a sequel?!
Or did they?
---
They should make a sequel and release it in 1996, so it will be like a 20
year reunion! It shouldn't be hard to get Bill Cosby, Raquel Welch, and
Dick Butkis back for a reunion. Forget Larry Hagman (Murdoch). He's (SPOILER!)
dead! And if they can't get the original Speed, they can get Jan Michael
Vincent. New group! MJ&S.sequel.speculation!

I'm sure we can get the original speed back.
Like, what's he done since "A View To A Kill"?
We'd also need the black guy who played Albert, the rival Union driver.
Is the guy who played Harry Fishbine still alive?
Netters?
---
Jeff, since you are in posession of a copy of this film, could you possibly
type in some (all?) of the credits? We need to know who played "Man With
Zipper" and others. If you do type them in (it would be quite a task), you
should have Dave put ANSI codes in the text so they will change colors just
like in the movie!!!

Thanks to all netters who submitted questions (and answers! Glad
we were able to clear up the whole Speed controversy). Enjoy...

THE MOTHER JUGS & SPEED FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS LIST
===============================================================================
This list is a compendium of Frequently Asked Questions about the
movie Mother Jugs & Speed (MJ&S). Granted, not too many people have been
asking questions, but this list is nonetheless provided for the curious
reader. This list is meant to be a companion piece to the official Mother
Jugs & Speed mailing list, and comes in handy for those not familiar with
the movie who have questions about it. The current maintainer of this list
is Jim Allenspach (jima@bucs1.bradley.edu), who is solely responsible for
its content. Any corrections, suggestions, and/or feedback should be sent
to him, NOT the maintainer of the mailing list.
To get on the MJ&S mailing list, write to Daniel Rench
(drench&bucs1.bradley.edu).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE QUESTIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Who played Mother, and what did he do in the movie?
A: Bill Cosby played Mother, the lead-footed driver.
2. Who played Jugs, and what did he do?
A: That's *she*, mind you. Jugs was played by Raquel Welch, and in the
movie she was the busty radio dispatcher who's busy staving off
incoming advances. Jugs, by the way, is 23 years old when
the movie takes place.
3. Who played Speed, and what did he do?
Speed, the suspended cop with the dark past, was played by Harvey
Keitel (though there is some speculation on the net that Jan
Michael Vincent could have done a much better job as Speed).
4. Who else was in the movie?
A: Dick Butkus and Larry Hagman.
5. Oh, really? What roles did THEY play?
A: Well, Dick Butkus played Rodeo (another ambulance driver who hailed
from Lubbock, TX), and Larry Hagman played Murdoch.
6. What is Harry Fishbine's nickname?
A: Harry Fishbine, the owner of the F+B Ambulance Service at which
MJ&S are gainfully emplyed, is nicknamed "Doughnut".
7. Who directed the movie, and what other films has he done?
A: Peter Yates directed the movie, and he has also directed
"Bullitt".
8. What's the movie about?
A: It's a free-wheeling brew of black comedy and melodrama that
centers around the outlandish exploits of a shoestring ambulance
crew.
9. How much is a copy of MJ&S?
A: MJ&S is currently available from Movies Unlimited for $79.95. Other
places may have it cheaper.
10. What kind of humor IS MJ&S?
A: Humor of the most irresistable kind!
11. How can I find out more info about the movie?
A: Keep reading the MJ&S mailing list! Or go rent the movie.

MJ&SFAQ HISTORY
04-26-91 Jim Allenspach is accepted into the MJ&S mailing list.
He is so exuberant that he composes the first MJ&S FAQ
list (this one).
04-29-91 Yaay, some people actually saw the movie! Number of
questions jumps to 11, some of the older entries changed
a bit to be better grammarical-wise. Thanks to Jeff Laird
for his FAQ submissions.
05-02-91 Some more modification to the answer are done. Number of
questions holds at 11.

Peter Yates directed several other fine films besides Bullitt (1968)
and MJ&S (1976) like Breaking Away (1979), The Deep (1977),
The Dresser (1983), Eleni (1985), Eyewitness (1981),
For Pete's Sake (1974), The Hot Rock (1972), Krull (1983),
Murphy's War (1971), and Suspect (1987).
My video movie guide gives several of these films favorable ratings
(except for Krull, The Deep, and For Pete's Sake).

Jim Allenspach expresses gratitude and wonders about MJ&S over the summer
The ListManager welcomes two (non bucs1) users to the list!
And other stuff

Thanks to all who have submitted FAQs for the list! Your
contributions are slowly but surely being absorbed...
A quick question for the moderator: what's gonna happen to
the list over the summer? Just wondering...
jma
---
I won't be here this summer, and neither will a large number of the
subscribers to this list. I was planning on putting it on hold until
August, but if anyone's REALLY interested, I'll let someone take it
over for the summer.
In other news, Kevin Crumrine expressed an interest in the MJ&S digest.
I think Amy Harris did, too, but I don't remember exactly. Let's just
say she did. They're both on the list now. Welcome to the MJ&S Digest!
On another topic, /user/m and /user/s have just about no space left.
If you are in either of these directories, like to save your MJ&S
digests for posterity, and just can't cuz there's no room, don't worry.
I have been archiving each issue (using arc) and the whole archive file
is available from me by request. Yes, you can also grab these from
bucs1's bu.banter, but mine is in a convenient, compact form. Plus it
has BOTH versions of v1 #7. As of v1 #13, the Compleat MJ&S Digest
Archive is 25,364 bytes. A drop in the proverbial Bukkitt.
